How Can We Settle This Woman Down? by Joan Kent, PhD

Okay, I said to myself, I’m the food and brain chemistry expert. How can we settle this woman down?

She was one of my first nutrition clients ever, and she came to our initial session talking in circles. She spoke so fast it was tough to follow her.

She kept saying, “I think that’s the thing for me, Joan.” But she said it about a dozen or more “things”, even though each one was a completely different thing.

I recalled a quote by John Sterling. Sterling was a sports announcer who called the play-by-play for every Yankees game from 1989 to 2019. Noted for several quotations – mainly on sports topics – Sterling also said this:

“Emotion turning back on itself, and not leading on to thought or action, is the element of madness.”

Well, my client was agitated, repeating herself, and sometimes making no sense. Her feelings were raw and certainly not leading to thought or action. By Sterling’s view, she was acting “mad.”

To the degree that food could stabilize her, I speculated, she could find a bit of solid thought that might then lead to action.

So what did I do with her?

Here’s a Stability Tip

I started with one simple step:  I told her to eat protein with literally everything she ate.  After she had mastered that, we added in healthful fats.

The protein and the fats stabilized her brain chem and her glucose. You can do this, too.

Once she was feeling better, we moved on to other foods. Over time, her diet shifted completely. She even gave up the junky foods that had overrun her diet – and her life – for many years.

And it worked! The effect was not only emotional. Her health parameters stabilized, as well.

Her doctor was pleased – pleased enough to send me a thank-you note.

That turned out to be just the first of many thank you notes I’ve received from clients’ doctors over the years.

Do your emotions seem to have a life of their own? Do you find yourself agitated, irritable, blah, even depressed? We blame feelings on circumstances, but they can in fact be triggered by what we eat.
